Roof Parging

'Parging', sometimes reffered to as 'torching', refers to the traditional method of applying lime plaster to the underside of roofing slates or tiles. Before the use of roofing membranes,  lime plaster was applied directly to the underside of the slates or tiles to help secure them in place and provide additional protection from the wind and rain.

Below are a couple of images to show some typical 'parging' on a barn in Patterdale, Cumbria, before on the left and the completed work on the right. This was undertaken in a  traditional 'haired' lime putty mix.
